Asking and Giving Suggestion and Offering to do Something
Hi guys! Comeback with me, on my blog this time I'll discuss asking and giving Suggestion and Offering to do something.
There is a difference between Suggestion and Offer, Suggestion is used when we give an idea, opinion, or advice to be considered for others before that person makes a decision. Where as Offer is an offer given to another person in the form of assistance, or something else such as offering food or drinks where the person we offer may accept of reject the offer.
1. Asking for Suggestion
There are many expressions that can be used to ask for advice (Suggestion), one way is to use the word "Shall" which means to or should.
Shall I/We + Verb 1
Example :
- Shall I get a new job?
(Should I look for a new job?)
- Where shall we go this holiday?
(Where should we go on vacation this time?)
In addition to the example above that used the word "Shall", Other examples of expressions to ask to advice suggestion are :
- What should I do?
- Should I go to the clinic?
2. Giving Suggestion
One way to give advice (Suggestion) is to use the word "Could" which means can/can or "might" which means possible/allowed.
Example :
- You could find a new job.
(You can find a new job)
- We might go to Komodo Island together this holiday
(We might be able to go to Komodo Island together this holiday)
In addition to this examples of the above expressions we can also use various other expressions such as :
You should + Verb 1
Example :
- You should see the doctor
(You have to go to the doctor)
Why dont you + Verb 1
Example :
- Why don't you try a new restaurant in downtown
(Why don't you try a new restaurant in the city center)
How About + Verb -ing/Noun
Example :
- What about picnic?
(How about a picnic?)
If we were you, I would + Verb 1
Example:
- If I were you, I would accept the offer
(If I were you, I would accept the offer)
Let's + Verb 1
Example :
- Let's pray before we study
(Let's pray before we learn)
3. Accepting a Suggestion
When we agree and accept advice given by someone we can say :
- Sounds great
(Sounds great)
- That's a good idea
(That is a good idea)
- OK
(Alright)
4. Declining a Suggestion
When we disagree and think the advice given is not good enough, we can say :
-Maybe some other time
(Maybe one time, next time)
-I don't think it's a good idea
(I don't think that's a good idea)
Example dialogue :
Pinkan : Hi Della!
Della : Hallo Pinkan! What are you doing?
Pinkan : Nothing much. I feel boring, what should i do?
Della : How about playing Basketball?
Pinkan : I don't feel like it.
Della : How about watching movie?
Pinkan : OK yes, let's watch "Annabelle"
Della : I would rather not. I am not much into horror movie. How about "Toy Story"?
Pinkan : OK. Let's go! When do you want to go?
Della : 4 o'clock show
Pinkan : It sounds good. Okay, see u then.
Della : Okay, see you.
Conclusion :
From the dialogue above which is an expression of suggestion, that is :
- What Should i do? (Asking suggestion)
- How about playing Basketball? (Giving suggestion)
- I don't feel like it (Declining suggestion)
- How about watching movie? (Giving suggestion)
- I would rather not. I am not much into horror movie. How about "Toy Story"? (Giving suggestion)
- OK. Let's go! (Accepting suggestion)
- It sounds good. (Accepting suggestion)

5. Giving Offer
Some examples of expressions giving offers that we can use are follows :
Would you like + Noun/To infinitive
Example :
- Would you like a glass of milk?
(Would you like a glass of milk?)
Examples of expressions give another offer :
- Can/May I help you?
(Can/May I help you?)
6. Accepting an Offer.
If we want to accept someone's offer we can say :
- Yes I'd love to
(Yes, I like it)
- That's very kind of you
(You're so kind)
7. Declining an Offer.
If we refuse someone's offer we should refuse it gently and politely, for example we can say :
- I'm sorry, I can't
(Sorry, I can't)
- Thank you for your kindness, but I can handle it
(Thank you for your kindness, but I can handle it)
Example dialogue :
Pinkan : Hey you looks pale, what's wrong with you?
Della : My stomach hurts, maybe this is because I didn't take breakfast this morning.
Pinkan : May I bring you to the UKS?
Della : Sure, It would be really helpful.
Pinkan : How about i bring you some foods?
Della : Yes please.
Pinkan : Okay. but, I will take you to UKS first, then I will bring you foods and medicine.
Della : That is so nice of you, Thank you.
Pinkan : It was friend are for.
Conclusion :
From the dialogue above which is an expression of suggestion, that is :
- May I bring you to the UKS? (Giving offer)
- Sure, It would be really helpful (Accepting offer)
- How about I bring you some foods? (Giving offer)
- Yes please (Accepting offer)
